Carved into this section of wall is one of the most striking pieces of graffiti on site. Unlike the names and regimental marks found elsewhere, this is a scene.
Several large whales, likely fin whales, are depicted alongside a barbed harpoon, with ships sketched around them. Above, a star, possibly the North Star, has also been etched into the stone. Whether these elements form a single narrative or were added over time by different hands is uncertain, but together they create a vivid maritime tableau.
During the 18th century, the waters around Gibraltar, particularly along the eastern side of the Rock and into the Bay, were known for whaling activity. It is possible that the soldier who carved this had witnessed such scenes locally or recalled them from time spent at sea or on another posting.
